The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has launched the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Special Needs Centre building project at the Burma Hall, Burma Camp.

The launch was part of series of events by the Ghana armed forces to mark World Autism Awareness Month.

Speaking at the event, the Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai, stated that the launch provides an opportunity not only to raise awareness but also to encourage meaningful conversations to strengthen support systems for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.

He indicated that for many families, raising a child with autism can present unique challenges, particularly in accessing specialised services, appropriate learning environment, and social understanding.

As such, GAF has responded to this societal need by initiating the move to establish the GAF Special Needs Centre.

The facility, which will be constructed by “All Needs Development,” will comprise 42 accessible classrooms, staff offices, recreational facilities, administration block, specialised therapeutic facilities, among others.

Additionally, services to be provided will include speech and language therapy, behavioural interventions, psychological assessment and counselling.

It is worth noting that the Dzorwulu Special School was visited as part of construction assessment and benchmarked against the Spectrum Academy of UTAH, United States to develop a comprehensive and well fitted architectural concept for GAF.

The Spectrum Academy of UTAH is, therefore, expected to give technical support and management in running the GAF centre upon completion.

The Guest of Honour Ato Brown said the theme, “Celebrate Differences,” is a reminder that diversity in how people think, learn, communicate and interact should not be considered as weakness in society. Instead, it should be celebrated as a strength that enriches our communities.

He stated that the Special Needs Centre Project represents a visionary step toward creating a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters opportunities for growth.

The Director Mental Health at GAF Health Services, Dr Erica Danfrekua Dickson, outlined the key characteristics, strengths and talents of individuals with neurodiversity conditions.

She encouraged personnel to be accommodating and work towards eliminating the stigma associated with the disorder emphasising the need for continuous awareness.

The Special Guest, Serwah Quaynor, urged all organisations and security services to actively participate in the awareness campaign and support the development of the GAF Special Needs Centre.

She reiterated that collective efforts are essential to ensure that children with special needs receive the care, education and opportunities they deserve.

In a fund-raising appeal, the military high command led the charge with a donation of GH₡500,000.00, with troops and other partners making meaningful contributions.
