The footage, shared on X on April 21, 2026, has since gone viral, sparking widespread reactions and debates online.

The removal has drawn public attention, not only because of the prominence of the position but also due to its deep cultural and institutional relevance within the Asante traditional system.

Role of the Kyeame

In Asante tradition, the Kyeame, also known as the Okyeame, serves as the chief linguist and spokesperson of the Asantehene.

The role extends beyond ceremony, encompassing the interpretation of customary law, mediation, and communication of the chief’s authority.

A central duty of the Kyeame is the invocation and interpretation of the sacred oath known as the Otumfuo Ntam Kɛseɛ, a key element in the administration of traditional justice and authority.

Reasons behind the destoolment

Details released by the palace, indicated that multiple concerns led to the decision to remove Kyeame Kofi Nti from office.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh on April 21, 2026, among the issues was the question of his royal lineage; an essential requirement for occupying such a high traditional position.

Doubts surrounding his background reportedly raised questions about his legitimacy.

The council also cited his alleged inability to properly invoke the Ntam Kɛseɛ, which is considered a critical test of competence and adherence to tradition.

Further concerns included the alleged improper handling of the sacred oath, particularly claims that he retained multiple invocations beyond what is permitted under customary rules.

Also, he was accused of failing to report instances where the oath had been invoked, an omission described as a serious breach, as such reporting ensures accountability within the traditional justice system.

The Asanteman Council also considered allegations brought forward by the Ayaasehene regarding the alleged wrongful enstoolment of an Ayaase Dikro, an issue that touches on the integrity of chieftaincy processes.
