According to Assum, persistent accusations of impotence drove him to the extreme act
A 42-year-old cocoa farmer, Kofi Assum, from Aworowa in the Techiman South Municipality of the Bono East Region, has shared the reasons behind his decision to cut off his manhood in a suicide attempt.
According to Assum, persistent accusations of impotence drove him to the extreme act.
He explained that although he is able to function normally, community gossip and false claims about his sexual potency pushed him into despair.
“My manhood works alright but people kept accusing me of being impotent. Those were just hearsay. They never saw me with any woman, yet they said such things.
“Even if I don’t get an erection, as long as I can urinate, I am okay. I used a blade to cut it and it was painful. I wanted to stop but because I was willing to die, I continued until I cut it off completely. The bleeding was so much that I knew I would die, so I used a rag to cover the wound,” he recounted.
Assum insisted that his manhood works fine but people spread rumours because they never saw him with a woman.
“If I didn’t die, I will thank God. I want people to help me buy a tricycle (Pragyia) so I can work and pay back whoever supported me,” he added.
Assum, who also works as a basket weaver, was discovered in a pool of blood after the incident.
Neighbors rushed him to the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi for advanced treatment.
The incident occurred on Friday, April 17, 2026, at about 6:00 AM, according to family accounts.
