The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening defence cooperation with the United States following a high-level engagement at the Ministry of Defence.

Speaking on behalf of the Acting Minister for Defence, Cassiel Ato Forson, the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, announced that Ghana hosted a distinguished delegation from the United States led by Admiral George Wikoff, the U.S. Chief of Navy for Europe and Africa.

The delegation also included Rolf Olson, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Ghana.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Defence in Accra, centred on advancing the long-standing Ghana–United States defence partnership.

Key discussions focused on enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, a region of strategic importance that continues to face challenges such as piracy, illegal fishing and transnational crime.

Deputy Minister Genfi underscored Ghana’s appreciation for the United States’ consistent support in critical areas of national security.

He highlighted recent technical assistance provided by the U.S. in investigating a helicopter crash, as well as logistical support in airlifting Ghanaian troops to Jamaica for Operation Boafo.

“These collaborative efforts reflect the depth of our partnership and our shared resolve to promote peace and security both within the sub-region and beyond,” he noted.

The engagement further reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to sustained cooperation in defence, capacity building and intelligence sharing. It also signals a renewed focus on joint strategies aimed at ensuring stability across West Africa’s maritime domain.

The Ministry of Defence reiterated that such partnerships remain vital in addressing evolving security threats and fostering international cooperation in an increasingly complex global security environment.
