Long before he became the founding Chief Executive Officer of the University of Ghana Medical Centre, Dr Darius Kofi Osei’s life was shaped by sacrifice, resilience and hidden truths. Now, he is bringing those experiences to light in a forthcoming memoir that promises to reveal the personal journey behind his professional success.

Dr Osei shared on JoyNews’ Personality Profile that his earliest education began not through formal enrollment but by necessity.

According to him, as a child, he accompanied his mother, a teacher, to her classroom because she had no one else to care for him.

“I started at age four because she didn’t have anybody to take care of me… so you sat in that classroom at four, five and six. It’s like you did class one for three years,” he recalled.

Though unconventional, those years instilled discipline and exposed him to learning early, laying the foundation for his future.

Raised alongside two brothers, Dr Osei described a household that was close-knit and stable. Yet at age 16, he discovered that the man he had always believed to be his father was not his biological parent.

“My mother was married to the father of my other brothers. So, when I was growing up, that is what I saw. Actually, I thought he was my father until I was 16,” he revealed.

Despite the revelation, he spoke with admiration for the man who raised him, describing him as fair and compassionate.

“He was a very good man who never showed any sign that I’m not part of his children,” he said.

While Dr Osei is best known for his leadership in establishing UGMC, his upcoming book will explore the untold struggles and defining moments that shaped his identity.
