The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has raised concerns about the country’s ability to detect narcotics at its ports of entry.

Speaking on TV3 on April 26, 2026, the lawmaker said his checks across major airports and seaports show that there are no working intrusive narcotic detection scanners in operation in the country, raising questions about security at the borders.

"Do you know when you go to your airport, the airport we have and all the ports we have, from Yakubu Taalei Airport in Tamale, Prempeh I Airport in Kumasi, Accra International Airport, and all the sea ports, there is no functional intrusive narcotic detective scanner? I’m not talking about an ordinary security scanner - intrusive narcotic detective scanner,” he stated.

Rev Fordjour said his claims are based on verified information and internal checks.

“Whatever I say, I have facts. I verify them before I come, and there are a lot of things I don’t even come out with; we deal with it behind the scenes. When it has to come out, then it necessarily needs to come out,” he set the record straight.

The lawmaker for Assin South said he had even filed a parliamentary question to seek clarification from the Minister of the Interior on the lack of functional narcotic detection scanners.

He said the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, confirmed the situation, stating that no detection scanners are currently operating at the country’s ports.

“I filed a parliamentary question. The Minister for Interior came and answered, and to everybody’s utter shock, he was very honest. He said yes, what is alleged is true.

"They’ve been broken down, and there’s none operating, but we are taking steps to acquire them, subject to the availability of funds, and it is a priority, so we are hoping to find funds immediately and purchase,” he said.

Ntim Fordjour said his recent follow-up checks at the Ghana Airports Company Limited show that steps are being taken to address the situation, but the process is not yet complete.

“It was just recently that I got the information from the Ghana Airport Company that they have taken steps and initiated procurement processes, but they have yet to complete the procurement for the items to come,” he noted.
