ECG blames power outages on obsolete infrastructure

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has addressed the recent wave of power outages across the country, attributing the disruptions to significant distribution challenges within its aging network.

According to a statement from the utility provider, the unplanned outages are primarily caused by obsolete infrastructure, weakened cables, and overloaded transformers that have struggled to keep up with current demand.

Transformer Upgrade and Replacement Programme (TURP)

In response to these systemic issues, the government and ECG have launched the Transformer Upgrade and Replacement Programme (TURP). This multi-phase initiative aims to stabilize the national grid through:

- Mass Installation: Over 2,500 new transformers are being deployed across ECG’s operational areas to increase capacity.

- Infrastructure Overhaul: Systemic replacement of weakened cables and outdated equipment to prevent recurring faults.

Impact on Consumers

ECG warned that while the upgrades are necessary for long-term reliability, they will require planned outages to ensure the safety of technical teams during installation.

The company stated that the public would be informed in advance of these scheduled maintenance windows.
