The Ministry of the Interior has imposed a ban on the use of motorbikes in Binduri and surrounding communities in the Upper East Region following a recent attack on a military patrol team.
The directive, which takes immediate effect, comes after unknown assailants attacked a military convoy in Binduri, raising fresh security concerns in the area.

In a statement signed by the Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubarak-Muntaka, on April 28, 2026, the ministry said the restriction is part of efforts to maintain law and order and support ongoing security operations.
“Following an attack by unknown assailants on a military patrol team in Binduri, Upper East Region, the Ministry of the Interior has, with immediate effect, restricted the use of motorbikes by all persons in Binduri Township and its environs,” the statement said.
The Ministry explained that the measure is necessary to protect lives and property.
“In view of the security situation, the restriction is a necessary measure to maintain law and order, protect lives and properties, and support ongoing security operations in the area,” it added.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and support efforts aimed at restoring peace in the area.
“Government urges Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, the Youth, and all residents of Binduri and surrounding communities to exercise restraint and remain calm. Citizens are encouraged to use peaceful and lawful channels to address grievances and to support efforts to restore lasting peace,” the statement noted.
It warned that anyone who defies the directive will face legal consequences.
“Any person who contravenes this directive will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the Ministry cautioned.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens.
“The Ministry of the Interior remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens,” it said.
The decision follows a deadly incident involving the Ghana Armed Forces, where a convoy escorting civilians came under attack in Binduri on April 27, 2026.
According to the military, the convoy, which was transporting about 140 civilians from Bawku to Bolgatanga, was ambushed by armed men, leading to the death of three civilians and injuries to another.
The military said it returned fire, killing seven of the attackers, arresting 10 suspects, and retrieving weapons and ammunition.
“A Ghana Armed Forces escort convoy protecting 140 civilians was attacked this morning, Monday, April 27, 2026, at Binduri by unknown elements. The convoy from Bawku towards Bolga was shot at several times, resulting in the death of 3 of the civilians being escorted and injuring one,” the army said.
It added that the situation was brought under control after the attackers were repelled.

“In the process, the military successfully repulsed the attack on the convoy, resulting in the death of 7 assailants… Ten other suspects were arrested and are assisting with investigations,” the statement added.
The military has cautioned the public against confronting security personnel during operations and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
