Police officers stationed at the Nkwanta-Breweniase barrier along the Eastern Corridor in the Oti Region have made a significant breakthrough after intercepting a large cache of ammunition hidden in a cargo truck.

According to a report on adomonline.com, on April 29, 2026, the interception, which followed routine checks, led to the arrest of two young men travelling in the vehicle.

The truck, a MAN Togo cargo vehicle with registration number GW 9927–13, was en route from Accra-Tema Station to Damanko in the Nkwanta North District when officers flagged it.

A search of the truck revealed more than 20,000 rounds of ammunition, along with a foreign-made firearm, an alarming find in a region already grappling with security challenges.

The seized items included 7,000 AA ammunition, 3,000 BB cartridges, and 1,124 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, among others, bringing the total to over 20,000 rounds.

The driver, identified as 26-year-old Kende Richard, and his mate, 20-year-old Latif Adam, were immediately taken into custody.

Both are currently assisting police with investigations as authorities work to uncover where the weapons came from.

The Ghana Police Service, with support from the Nkwanta South Command, is now piecing together the possible network behind the consignment, an effort many hope will prevent potential violence.

The operation comes at a time when security has been tightened across the municipality due to recurring tensions and concerns about instability in parts of the district.

For residents, the discovery is both troubling and reassuring; troubling because of what could have happened if the weapons had reached their destination, and reassuring because of the vigilance of officers on duty.
