Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has thrown his full support behind Chief State Attorney Sylvia Ama Adusu for her election to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in 2026.

In a formal endorsement, Dr Ayine described Dr Adusu as a dedicated and experienced legal professional whose career spans more than three decades in public service.

Her work, he noted, has been instrumental in shaping Ghana’s approach to maritime law and resolving complex disputes with neighbouring countries.

At the heart of her experience is her role with the Ghana Boundary Commission, where she has been deeply involved in sensitive negotiations over maritime boundaries, often helping to ease tensions and promote cooperation in the region.

“This is the first time a Ghanaian woman has been nominated for election to ITLOS,” Dr Ayine emphasised.

Beyond her professional achievements, the nomination is being seen as a milestone for representation, with many viewing it as an opportunity to amplify women’s voices in global legal institutions.

President John Dramani Mahama has also thrown his weight behind Dr Adusu, praising her integrity, depth of knowledge, and commitment to fairness and the rule of law.

He expressed confidence that she would make a meaningful contribution to the tribunal if elected.

For Ghana, the nomination goes beyond individual recognition.

It reflects the country’s ongoing commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and its belief in resolving disputes through dialogue and established legal frameworks.

If successful, Dr Adusu’s election would not only elevate Ghana’s presence in international maritime law but also signal the country’s continued dedication to upholding global legal standards while championing inclusion on the world stage.
