John Dramani Mahama is Ghana's President
President John Dramani Mahama has visited Fuveme in the Volta Region to assess communities affected by recent tidal waves and to engage residents on both immediate relief measures and long-term coastal protection strategies.
This update was shared by the social media page of the Presidency on April 29, 2026.
He explained that the area forms part of the World Bank-supported West Africa Coastal Areas Management Program (WACA), a $150 million initiative designed to tackle coastal erosion and tidal wave impacts in vulnerable communities across West Africa.

President Mahama assured residents that the project, currently at the design stage, will soon move into implementation.
Planned works include the construction of sea defence systems, groynes, and ecosystem restoration efforts such as coconut tree and mangrove planting to help stabilise the shoreline.
In the interim, the government is considering emergency interventions, including dredging of the estuary to reduce water pressure and minimise further coastal damage.
