The late Abigail Opoku's father is demanding justice
The father of 27-year-old Abigail Opoku has called for the dismissal of health workers at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital following the death of his pregnant daughter.
Abigail Opoku reportedly died after she was allegedly denied a caesarean section due to the unavailability of beds at the hospital’s recovery ward.
Family demands probe after pregnant woman dies at a hospital in Kasoa
According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, after the deceased had been referred from a private health facility to the hospital in Kasoa.
Her father, speaking after the incident, blamed doctors and nurses on duty and called for immediate action against them.
“The doctors and nurses who were on duty at the time of the incident at the Mother and Child Hospital must be dismissed. The government must pay attention to that hospital because they have caused me great harm with what they did to my child. All my hope is lost,” he said in a video interview on X.
He further described how he was informed about his daughter’s death and the events that followed.
“It was after my daughter had died that someone had the courage to inform me of it. They told me they were calling the mortuary workers to come and carry her body away. I was shaking and couldn't control myself when they carried my daughter away to the mortuary,” he added.
He also raised concerns about the cost involved in handling the body after her death.
“The mortuary attendant said the unborn baby had to be removed from my daughter, and the process, together with the embalmment, would amount to GH₵1200,” he stated.
Family members say Abigail Opoku spent nearly 36 hours at the hospital without receiving the needed surgical intervention, despite repeated requests.
Her sister explained that both the patient and relatives asked for a caesarean section but were told there was no available bed in the recovery ward.
“Before she was referred, we were told to allow for a cesarean surgery to save both the baby and the mother. But when we told the nurses at Mother and Child Hospital, they said the recovery ward was fully occupied, so they couldn’t perform the surgery,” she said.
She added that the situation worsened as no immediate care was given upon arrival at the facility.
“They told us she will deliver. We arrived between 2 and 3 am, but they gave her no medication. She was lying in pain, and even when she personally requested the CS, they didn’t mind her,” she added.

The family believes the deceased could have been saved if the surgery had been done earlier and is calling for a review of operations at the hospital.
Management of the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital is yet to respond to the allegations.
