The National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has pushed back against the Minority in Parliament over its demand for accountability on energy sector levies.

He argued that those making such calls must first reflect on their own record.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Vanderpuye assured Ghanaians that the government is committed to transparency across sectors and will respond to any genuine concerns raised by the public or stakeholders.

However, he questioned the Minority’s demand for accountability on the Energy Sector Levy, suggesting that they lacked the moral authority to lead such a call.

While addressing the matter, he invoked the principle of equity, insisting that accountability should not be selective.

According to him, those [the Minority] who are now pressing for answers must come with “clean hands,” as he accused them of failing to subject itself to the same scrutiny when it was in power.

“Well, unlike them, we would do so because that is what is required of us as a responsible government. But what was naive and a bit off [for me] was their demand that the minister should be sacked. ‘John is competent, and they admire his capability and competence. The only thing they can do is to wish that he’s not in play,” he said.

His remarks follow a formal request filed under the Right to Information Act by the First Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu.

In his request to the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Iddrisu is seeking detailed information on how energy sector levies have been collected and spent.

The Minority’s concerns come at a time when many Ghanaians are once again dealing with intermittent power outages, popularly known as dumsor.

Many have lamented that the situation has disrupted businesses, households, and daily routines across the country.

Despite the growing frustration among citizens, Vanderpuye rejected calls for the dismissal of the Energy Minister, describing them as unnecessary and politically motivated.

He instead defended the minister’s competence, maintaining that the government remains focused on addressing the challenges in the energy sector while staying accountable to the public.
