Tobi Amusan and Samukonga set for Accra 2026 African Athletics Championships

Former World champion, Tobi Amusan has confirmed her participation for the upcoming 2026 African Senior Athletics Championship in Ghana.

Tobi Amusan will lead a list of heavyweights Nigerian team for the Championship in Accra spanning May 12-17, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

The Nigerian superstar who is a specialist in the 100m hurdles is the current world record holder in the 100 metres hurdles with a time of 12.12 seconds set at the 2022 women's 100 metres hurdles semi-final in Eugene.

The 28-year-old is also the current Commonwealth and African champion in the 100m hurdles.

She won back-to-back Commonwealth and African titles in 2018 and 2022 in the 100m hurdles and is also a two-time African Games champion.

Also expected to make a strong impact in Accra when the continent gathers is Zambian 400m Olympian Muzala Samukonga.

The 23-year-old claimed bronze at the Paris Olympic Games. Earlier in his career, at just 19, he won gold medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the African Championships.

Currently ranked ninth in the world in the 400m, Samukonga is tipped to be one of the standout performers at the championships, which Ghana is hosting for the first time in over four decades.

More than 1,000 athletes are expected to compete at the 24th edition of the biennial event.
