The Blue Water Guards have dismantled equipment at an illegal mining site close to homes in a renewed crackdown on illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey.

In a video shared on X by State News on May 3, 2026, the guards are captured destroying equipment used for galamsey at an undisclosed location.

This recent operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to combat illegal mining and protect the country’s water bodies.

The Blue Water Guards initiative was introduced to address the widespread environmental destruction caused by galamsey.

Specifically, it focuses on safeguarding rivers and lakes, which are critical sources of drinking water, irrigation, and ecological balance.

Illegal mining has long contributed to water pollution, land degradation, and health risks in affected communities, prompting intensified government intervention.

As of December 2025, the government had deployed about 1,700 Blue Water Guards nationwide to strengthen monitoring and enforcement.

The latest deployment includes a third cohort of 636 personnel, tasked with increasing surveillance and responding swiftly to illegal mining activities across various regions.
