The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has criticised the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) over what he says is its silence on recent power outages.

His comments follow power cuts in parts of the country, which the government says were caused by a fire at a Ghana Grid Company facility near the Akosombo Dam, as well as ongoing work to upgrade transformers in some areas.

Speaking on Channel One News on May 2, 2026, Adomako said he expected the PURC to address the situation.

“I am surprised PURC is very quiet. This was the same PURC, which in 2024 sanctioned board members for failing to provide a timetable for a dysfunction causing disruption to the Ghanaian consumer,” he said.

He added that the power supply has been unstable in many areas, yet the regulator has not said anything.

“There have been fluctuations all over, and I am surprised to date PURC has not released any statement. That is quite surprising,” he added.

He said the PURC has a duty to speak to the public and keep consumers informed, especially when there are problems with the power supply.
