Ghana's 4x100 relay team athletes
Some concerned Ghanaians have rallied behind athletes Benjamin Azamati and Abdul Rasheed Saminu after they complained about the lack of support from authorities for athletics events.
After the team secured automatic qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing with a time of 38.09 seconds, Benjamin Azamati and Abdul Rasheed Saminu raised concerns about inadequate logistics support and poor travel arrangements to Gaborone, Botswana.
In a statement released on May 4, 2026, the ministry explained that travel arrangements are the responsibility of the athletics association and international competition protocols, and therefore cannot be blamed.

This has triggered backlash from social media users, who criticised the unfair treatment of athletes in preparing for major events, describing the situation as “disgusting.”
Many argued that the sports ministry prioritises the Black Stars over other disciplines, which hampers growth and affects athletes’ performance.
They applauded Azamati and Saminu for speaking out and urged the sports ministry and the Ghana Athletics Association to improve logistics and travel arrangements for athletes.

It’s very disgusting how Athletics is treated in this country meanwhile our athletes do so well, just support them!

The attention is always on black stars who have not even achieved any success in years.

This is coming from the professional athlete himself. I hope the ministry will do something significant about it. The entirety of sports is not only about football, athletics is part.

I feel your pain bro... So sad as if we don't have people who think in this country. I shock. In sports, the Little details are the differentiator.
