The West African Examinations Council has confirmed that five individuals have been arrested for engaging in examination malpractice during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) across the country.

According to WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, the suspects were apprehended for various irregularities, although the council is yet to release full details of the offences.

“There have been some incidents so far. About four or five people have been picked up already,” the official disclosed, adding that names and specifics will be made public once investigations are complete.

Speaking on The Pulse on Monday, May 4,2026, Kapi admitted that despite tighter supervision and invigilation, malpractice continues to surface, forcing the council to step up its response.

He explained that WAEC has intensified efforts behind the scenes, including organising detailed briefing sessions for everyone involved in the exams, from district directors to invigilators, to remind them of what is at stake and the consequences of cutting corners.

Beyond the exam halls, the council is also reaching out to communities, urging education directors, traditional authorities, political figures, and opinion leaders to play an active role in discouraging malpractice and promoting honesty among candidates.

“Examination malpractice is inimical to our development and the future of education in this country,” he stressed.

To tighten monitoring further, Kapi said WAEC has deployed more personnel across the country, drawing staff from both its headquarters in Accra and regional offices to strengthen oversight at examination centres.

“We are putting more people in the field to ‘watch the watchmen’ and ensure these incidents are reduced to the barest minimum,” he added.
