The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has granted the Queen Mother of the Agona Traditional Area, Nana Acheamponmaa Ntansa Yiadom, the authority to select the rightful candidate for the vacant male stool.

According to a report by Opemsuo.com, sighted by GhanaWeb, the Asantehene gave this directive on May 4, 2026, during a meeting with the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace.

The report further indicates that Nana Acheamponmaa Ntansa Yiadom and her kingmakers have been given a two-week ultimatum to present the rightful candidate to the traditional council.

This directive follows a four-year delay in enstooling a successor to the late Nana Frimpong Anokye Ababio.

It also comes after a faction of the Agona royal family was barred from the stool.

Following the ban, the royals, in July 2025, submitted a plea to the Asantehene seeking its reversal. The petition was presented through the Tepahene, Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem.

As a condition for considering the plea, Otumfuo instructed the Tepahene to engage the group and retrieve the Komfo Anokye Amoampong deity they were alleged to have seized. It is further alleged that the group intended to retain the deity within their jurisdiction if they failed to secure the Agonahene stool for one of their members.

“You have erred. You have not apologised and yet you are fighting over a stool. You are apologising, and yet you have not restored the property you seized. Where is the remorse?” the Asantehene questioned.

The report also details that the Tepahene, who had been tasked with mediating the matter, informed the Asantehene that his efforts to resolve the issue had been unsuccessful.

According to Nana Atwenewa Ampem, attempts to recover the stool proved futile, as the group reportedly denied possessing it.

“They insisted that the stool is not with them. As a result, I withdraw myself from the case,” he told the Asantehene and the Council.

After reviewing the genealogy of the Agona stool, Otumfuo reportedly rebuked the group for their conduct, describing it as unacceptable.
