Ghanaian sprinter Edwin Gadayi
Ghanaian sprinter Edwin Gadayi has voiced frustration over what he describes as unequal support for athletics compared to football in Ghana, calling for greater investment in track and field.
Speaking in an interview, Gadayi stressed that Ghanaian athletes consistently deliver results on the international stage, often returning home with medals, yet receive far less attention and resources than the Black Stars.
“We normally bring home medals when we go for tournaments, but the same level of support is not given to us."
“Anytime it’s about football, the backing is massive. When it comes to athletics, it feels like we are being overlooked," Gadayi said.
The sprinter pointed to the country’s recent struggles in football, noting that the Black Stars failed to qualify for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, while athletes continue to represent Ghana competitively on the global stage.
“Imagine, they couldn’t qualify, yet the attention is still heavily on football,” Gadayi added. “Meanwhile, when we go to the world stage, we manage to bring something home, but the support we need is still lacking.”
He called for change, urging stakeholders to provide equitable support to athletics to help sustain and improve Ghana’s success in international competitions.
