Mr. Speaker, this thing about using local languages won't work. When we all decided to come together to form a modern state, we should have contended that holding on to our petty individual identities will stand in the way of our progress. The white man now says we must celebrate indigenous languages, so here we are, obedient fools following like sheep. Ask the English if they did not deliberately shed their indigenous languages and craft one new language for themselves. That language English has now taken over the world and expanded their spheres of influence. Of what use, petty indigenous languages spoken within pockets of our population? Let them be documented, kept in museums for researchers to use. Even Latin, powerful in its day, is no longer celebrated. Ghana has over 50 distinct languages; and if we count dialects it is over 150. We need teachers for all these languages. Oya! Let us use our brains and stop the spoon feeding of garbage from those evil obronis.

This is one area I believe I can confidently disagree with the Hon Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana's parliament.

One reason for the use of local languages as medium of instruction in our schools is the use of local languages by teachers and instructors to explain thoroughly, without ambiguity, subject matter to their students.

The issue, as far as I am concerned, is not the medium but the understanding or lack thereof on the part of the teachers or instructors of the subjects they teach. There are many teachers, instructors and professors around the world who have acquired all the certificates and credentials that points to classroom brilliance but there's nothing out there that is a true measure of their respective abilities to explain, apply and impart their presumed acquired knowledge unto their students.

Ghana and most of the educated folks across the African continent are good at a lot of things but we also know that Africa is lagging behind on core science education because those with certifications and credentials, to date, are more likely not able to explain subjects to others. STEM education is not just teaching like we do with history, English, accounting and other boring and lame subjects; they require understanding, application and practical approaches that no amount of local parlance will do.

At the end of the day our policy proposals on education must separate science education from all other subjects. For example, how many Ghanaians who went through secondary school education as science students under the WAEC "O" and "A" level era knew that the concepts of chemical reacting compounds could be explained using a trotro or basic vehicle traveling through the Aburi mountains? It takes a teacher/ instructor with understanding to do so and he was a Pakistani biology and chemistry instructor. He could not have explained it any better using Akan language or any other local dialect.

All of you send your children to Private International school in order to be taught ENGLISH and capable of reading and speaking good grammatically. Also enhance their ability to pass the BECE and WASCE Exams and pass well. In private schools due to the strictness of the owner to instruct the teachers to use English language and also strong supervision, the children are always good in English communication. Whereas those from poor background attending Government schools cannot understand simple English. Mr Speaker every child is unique when offers opportunity therefore the country Ghana give that opportunity to all.
Your suggestion is DIVIDE AND RULE hence change the statement.
