Kofi Asare is the Executive Secretary of Africa Education Watch (EduWatch)
Executive Secretary of Africa Education Watch (EduWatch), Kofi Asare, has criticised the structure of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), labeling it as unfair and excessively stressful for candidates.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, May 7, 2026, Asare argued that the current examination format places undue pressure on students due to the number of subjects they write within a limited time frame.
In his estimation, the current arrangement is outdated and does not reflect modern assessment practices used in other countries, which often incorporate aptitude tests and continuous assessments in their placement processes.
He has therefore called for reforms in the BECE structure, specifically suggesting that the number of examinable subjects be reduced to four core areas; Mathematics, English, Science, and General Paper.
"Piling 10 subjects into a 5-day high-stakes BECE just for school placement is torture for learners. We should reduce it to 4 subject: Math, English, Science, and General Paper. Other countries even utilize an aptitude test along with continuous assessment. This is 2026, not 1996," he stated.
His comments come amid the ongoing 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination nationwide examination organised by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The examination is expected to run until May 11, 2026 with 620,141 candidates from 20,395 schools participating.
