Ghana has become the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to be officially admitted into the Council of Ministers of Transport of the International Transport Forum (ITF) during the 2026 ITF Summit held in Leipzig, Germany.

The milestone positions Ghana among leading global transport policy nations and further strengthens the country’s reputation as an emerging transport and logistics hub in West Africa.

Speaking at the summit, the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, described Ghana’s admission as both an honour and a responsibility.

He said the government remains committed to building a modern, safe, resilient, and sustainable transport system capable of connecting people to economic opportunities.

The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening road transport infrastructure, revitalising the railway sector, modernising ports and maritime services, and improving integration across all modes of transport to enhance economic growth and regional connectivity.

Ghana’s admission into the ITF Council is expected to provide the country with greater access to global transport policy discussions, international best practices, and strategic partnerships aimed at improving mobility and infrastructure development.

The International Transport Forum is a global intergovernmental organisation that works with member countries to shape transport policies and promote sustainable mobility worldwide.
