Dr Srem-Sai rejects claims EOCO denied lawyers access to Abdul-Wahab Hanan
The Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, has dismissed allegations by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) denied legal counsel access to former National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) CEO, Abdul-Wahab Hanan, describing the claims as “dramatic” and misleading.
Speaking to journalists at the High Court in Accra on Thursday, May 7, 2026, Dr Srem-Sai said the former Attorney General has chosen media engagements over proper legal channels following the re-arrest of his clients.
“The former Attorney General, well, he’s now a practising private practitioner, he’s earning his fees, and I will not be the one to take money out of the pocket of the lawyer, but I think he shouldn’t be too dramatic about this,” he stated.

According to him, some requests made by Godfred Dame regarding Hanan had already been granted, while others were either pending or had been refused.
“I spoke with him in court on Hanan in particular, and he made some requests, some of which have been granted, others may be granted in the future, and others have been refused,” he stated.
Dr Srem-Sai further explained that Hanan was initially expected to undergo interrogation and be discharged, but the process was delayed after he reportedly fell ill and was taken to hospital.
“When Hanan was sent to the airport, he was supposed to be interrogated immediately, then he would be discharged, but he fell sick and was taken to the hospital,” he said.
He criticised the former Attorney General for allegedly taking the matter to the media instead of cooperating with investigators.
“When he came back, instead of his lawyers, the former Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General, Attorney General, to come so that interrogation would be done, he chose to rather grant interviews in his office and in the media and call into radio programmes to say things that he knows are wrong and are not true,” he alleged.
Dr Justice Srem-Sai also defended the Attorney General’s decision to withdraw charges against the accused persons, insisting the move was lawful and based on fresh evidence gathered during investigations.
“You cannot just come to court when you have fresh evidence in a criminal trial and start throwing it in the air.
“So, you need to first interrogate and hear from that case based on the state of that new fresh evidence that you’ve gathered. That will inform your final decision whether to go ahead and charge the person or not,” he noted.
He described suggestions that no fresh evidence existed as “improper and unethical.”
The Deputy Attorney General further accused Godfred Dame of contradicting his earlier position in court after later criticising the process publicly.
“Those of us who were in court, when we were withdrawing the charges, he was on our side. He even told the judge that he is familiar with withdrawals because he did a lot of withdrawals,” he added.
Lawyers for Abdul-Wahab Hanan and his wife, Faiza Sayyid Wuni, earlier alleged that they had been denied access to their clients more than 24 hours after EOCO re-arrested them.
The couple were re-arrested shortly after the Office of the Attorney General dropped all charges against them, citing the emergence of fresh evidence.
The two are standing trial for charges including stealing, money laundering, defrauding, and the intentional dissipation of public funds. They are alleged to have diverted over GH¢50 million through payments to Sawtina Enterprise and caused financial loss to the state.
