Amina Mamudu is a surogate mother
Surrogacy is no longer new in Ghana as more families are embracing it, while
some clinics are facilitating the process.
In addition, through the registration of Births and Deaths Act, 2020 (Act 1027). Parliament has given express statutory recognition to assisted reproductive births and created a mechanism through which parentage arising from surrogacy may be regularised.
The procedures outlined in Act 1027 ensure that the rights of all parties involved are protected.
A surrogate mother, Amina, Mamudu, has shared her experience with gestational surrogacy, explaining the emotional, legal, and procedural realities of carrying a baby for another person.
Legislation to regulate surrogacy, third-party reproduction important to prevent negligence
Speaking in an interview with TV3 on May 7, 2026, she detailed how surrogacy arrangements begin with full disclosure, legal agreements, and strict post-birth protocols designed to protect all parties involved.
"First they will inform you, for you to know that the child is not yours. We sign contracts, because if you don't sign the contracts, anything can happen. Some people can carry a child and run away", she remarked.
She explained that before the pregnancy even begins, surrogates are made fully aware of the arrangement.
According to her, this clarity is essential in ensuring that the surrogate understands her role in the process from the beginning.
The surrogate explained that once delivery takes place, the baby is immediately handed over to the intended parents, with no ongoing contact.
“.. You are carrying a child, but you won't feel it as if it's your own child. So, there is no emotional attachment to the child. All you have to do is to take care of the child while the baby is in your womb. Make sure you eat well, you take your medications, and you take advice from the agency. Apart from that, you are okay to go", she noted.
