Godfred Dame (R) says he never influenced Kissi Agyebeng (L)
Former Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has dismissed claims that he influenced the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, during his time in office.
According to him, although he appointed Kissi Agyebeng and shared a personal relationship with him, he never interfered in the work of the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
Godfred Dame denies political motive behind prosecution reforms under NPP
Speaking on Joy News and monitored by GhanaWeb on May 8, 2026, Godfred Dame said he nominated Kissi Agyebeng for appointment because of his competence and professional background.
“I appointed the Special Prosecutor, nominated him for appointment by the president in accordance with Article 195 of the Constitution. He was my classmate. I knew him very well. I trusted in his academic and professional abilities. He was my friend, and is still my friend,” he said.
He stressed that he never directed the OSP or attempted to influence his decisions while serving as Attorney General.
“Never once did I issue any direction to the special prosecutor, never at all. Never once did I write a single letter to him in my office,” he stated.
Dame explained that there was no conflict between his office and the Office of the Special Prosecutor during his tenure because he respected the independence of the institution.
“If you take a careful note, there was no instance in which there was a conflict between the Special Prosecutor and the Attorney General when I was in office,” he said.
He disclosed that the Special Prosecutor visited him twice while he was Attorney General, but the meetings were purely social.
“He visited me twice as Attorney General, as a friend, and we discussed matters, social matters, and all,” he added.
The former Attorney General also said he respected the independence of Agyebeng even when investigations involved members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“Indeed, he had demonstrated clearly that boldness of spirit to go after members of the NPP administration. But I was not bothered,” he noted.
Godfred Dame added that he later met Kissi Agyebeng again as a private legal practitioner when he represented former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Paul Adom-Otchere.
“I even visited him when we came into opposition as a private legal practitioner when I represented Mr Paul Adom-Otchere,” he said.
He maintained that he never used his office to influence the Special Prosecutor in any way.
“There was no interference whatsoever, no attempt to use my office as Attorney General or the former Attorney General to influence him in any way,” he stressed.

According to him, criticisms suggesting otherwise ignore the facts and history surrounding his relationship with the Special Prosecutor.
“So when people make all kinds of statements, I think they do so without the benefit of history, and also, they do so in the absence of a very careful examination of the facts,” he added.
Kissi Agyebeng was my friend then, and he remains my friend, but at no point did I use my office as Attorney General to influence him in any way.
