Former Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum
Former Education Minister and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has expressed concern about Ghana’s policy transition system.
He argued that the frequent changes in government leadership often lead to unnecessary disruptions, causing well-formulated reforms to lose momentum and direction and in come cases abandoned.
“Our transition system as a government is one of the poorest in the world,” he stated.
According to a report by adomonline.com, on May 8, 2026, Dr Adutwum explained that good governance requires building on systems that have already been tested and proven effective.
Drawing from his own experience in office as education minister, he noted that meaningful education reforms succeeded because of structured coordination and long-term commitment across all levels.
According to him, the lack of continuity often results in the loss of hard-won gains, especially in critical sectors like education, which require years of consistent planning and implementation.
When key programmes and structures are suddenly discontinued, the entire system suffers and struggles to move forward.
He cautioned that education reform should be seen as a continuous national effort, not something tied to political cycles.
He noted that leaders must be encouraged to maintain systems that actually deliver results, no matter who is in power.
“What I want is that we hold politicians accountable and do not allow politics to justify inefficiency,” he indicated.
