The Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Veronica Commey, has expressed concern about the Black Stars’ inability to win a major trophy like the national U-20 team did back in 2009.

According to her, she has been a long-standing fan of the national team throughout her life but has yet to witness them win any significant silverware.

She noted that the atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium when Arsenal qualified for the 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League final reminded her of the Black Satellites’ triumph at the U-20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009.

Why Carlos Queiroz picked so many new faces for Ghana’s Mexico clash

“See, I’m a Ghanaian. I love my national team, I love to see the team do well. When I saw Arsenal qualify for the Champions League, when I saw the euphoria, I quickly remembered when we won the Under-20 Championship in Egypt in 2009. I was there, and the question I caught myself asking was: when will the Black Stars give me this joy? Because my first love was watching the Black Stars, and in my lifetime we have never won any trophy,” she told Sporty FM.

Speaking on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the seasoned sports journalist stated that she expects the team to perform better than their previous outing in Qatar, where they exited at the group stage.

“I do believe if we can navigate the group stage, we can begin to dream again. I am an ardent believer in the Black Stars, that when their backs are against the wall, they rise to the occasion.

"And I do hope that, given that we look like underdogs, we just might be able to turn the tables around. So I’m not expecting us to win the World Cup, but I’m hoping we can go a step further than we did in Qatar,” she added.
