Former Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has raised alarm over what he describes as a dangerous misinformation campaign capable of exposing Electricity Company of Ghana officials to attacks from angry residents amid the country’s worsening power crisis.
This follows the circulation of a viral video alleging that the former Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and some NPP lawmakers from the Ashanti Region met with ECG District Directors and paid them to intentionally keep electricity off in their areas.
Reacting to the claims, the former MP strongly denied the allegation. He warned that such narratives could trigger hostility against innocent ECG workers already under pressure from public frustration over persistent outages.
“I find this claim deeply troubling because of the dangerous implications it carries for hardworking engineers and officials of ECG, unfairly exposing them to public anger, intimidation, and possible harm,” he stated.
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh described the allegation as false and malicious, and announced that lawyers have been instructed to begin legal proceedings against the radio and television station involved, as well as the presenter who allegedly made the claims publicly.
The development comes as Ghanaians continue to demand answers over recurring power cuts that have disrupted businesses and daily life across several parts of the country.
While political accusations persist, the former MP emphasised that his main argument is for national discussions to concentrate on genuine solutions to the power crisis instead of using the issue for political gain.
“The Ghanaian people deserve honesty, accountability, and leadership that is committed to solving problems rather than creating distractions,” he stressed.
The statement has sparked reactions online. Some users are calling for evidence to support the allegation, while others caution against politicising the energy crisis at the expense of public trust and safety.
