Ghana's Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued an urgent alert as thunderstorms and rain are expected to hit several parts of the country, with the northern, transitional and coastal regions facing the highest risk.

The latest update indicates that thunderstorms and varying intensities of rainfall have already begun affecting parts of the Volta Region, following a rainstorm system that moved inland from the coasts of Togo and Benin.

According to a report by adomonline.com on May 8, 2026, this weather system is anticipated to continue westward, impacting areas in the Eastern, Greater Accra, and Ashanti regions.

GMet has also noted that; "a separate moderate rainstorm in the northeastern part of the country is likely to move westward, potentially causing cloudy conditions and thunderstorms, with or without rain, over the Northern and Transitional regions from morning into afternoon."

Furthermore, rain-bearing clouds off Ghana’s western coast are expected to lead to rainfall activities in sections of the western coastal areas.

The agency has warned that "strong winds may precede the storms and has advised the public to take precautionary measures to ensure their safety."

Residents in affected areas are urged to remain alert, avoid flood-prone zones, and secure any loose objects that could be displaced by strong winds.
