The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has reiterated Ghana’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with China, describing the partnership between the two countries as one built not only on trade and diplomacy but also on “people, friendship, and shared progress.”

He made the remarks on May 9, 2026, during the inauguration ceremony of the 2026 new executives of the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies, where he represented President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking at the event, Debrah emphasised the longstanding cooperation between Ghana and the Chinese community in the country, noting that their contribution to national development has been significant.

“Meetings like this, gatherings like this, remind us that the relationship between Ghana and China is not just about business or diplomacy, but also about people and friendship, and shared progress,” he said.

“Over the years, your association has contributed meaningfully to Ghana’s growth, and we deeply appreciate the role you continue to play in strengthening the ties between our two countries.”

He congratulated the newly elected leadership of the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies and urged them to continue fostering collaboration and opportunity.

“To the incoming leadership, congratulations on taking up such a responsibility. I encourage you to continue building bridges, creating opportunities, and deepening the spirit of partnership that has brought our communities so close together,” he added.

The Chief of Staff also commended China’s trade policy towards Africa, highlighting tariff arrangements that he said reflect goodwill and support for African economies.

“The most important thing is that when we think about the policies of the Chinese government, whereby you’re giving all African countries free tariffs to export our products or commodities to your country, it shows how much China cares about us,” he noted.

He further emphasised government efforts to add value to Ghana’s raw materials through industrialization, while encouraging greater Chinese participation in Ghana’s manufacturing sector.

“We are going to help them indirectly add value to our products. In the same way, we also encourage you to as much as possible try and encourage many Chinese businesses who are interested in industrialization,” he said.

Debrah also reaffirmed the Mahama administration’s industrialization agenda, stating, “President Mahama’s vision is to make Ghana the industrial home of West Africa.”

The event also highlighted the re-election of prominent businessman Tang Hong as President of the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies, further cementing his influence within Ghana’s Chinese community.
