Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, has clarified that the Fund does not cover medical treatment outside Ghana.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, May 11, 2026, she said the institution has recently seen a growing number of appeals on social media from individuals seeking financial assistance to travel abroad for treatment.

According to her, while many of the requests are understandable, the Fund’s mandate is strictly limited by law to support the treatment of non-communicable diseases within Ghana.

She explained that the policy is intended not only to comply with the law establishing the Fund, but also to ensure that available resources benefit as many patients as possible.

“There is something that we keep getting. Many people want funding to go abroad. Let me announce here, and now, we do not support any funding outside the borders of this country. The money that we spend for one patient to go to India for treatment, we can use that for about 20 patients in the country. Anything beyond the borders as stipulated in the Act is beyond us,” she said.

Her comments come amid increasing public interest in the Fund, which was created to support Ghanaians battling chronic non-communicable diseases by easing the financial burden of treatment.
