Ghanaian sprint sensation , Joseph Paul Amoah has built a reputation as one of the country’s finest track athletes, carving his name into Ghana’s athletics history with record-breaking performances and memorable international appearances.

Born in Greater Accra on January 12, 1997, Amoah initially dreamt of becoming a footballer before his sprinting talent was discovered during his time at Prempeh College.

His speed quickly caught national attention after an impressive performance at Ghana’s Fastest Human competition in 2016.

His journey later took him to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology before earning a scholarship to Coppin State University in the United States, where he combined athletics with academics and graduated with an Accounting degree in 2020.

On the track, Amoah rapidly emerged as Ghana’s sprint star.

In 2019, he broke a 24 year old national 200m record after clocking 20.08 seconds at the NCAA Championships, becoming one of Ghana’s fastest men ever.

The sprinter also played a major role in Ghana’s relay success, helping the country win gold in the men’s 4x100m relay at the 2019 African Games in Rabat.

Amoah represented Ghana at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, reaching the semifinals of the men’s 200m event and setting another national mark in the process.

In 2022, he etched his name deeper into Ghanaian athletics history after becoming only the fourth Ghanaian athlete to run the 100m in under 10 seconds, posting a remarkable personal best of 9.94 seconds.

One of his biggest career highlights came at the 2023 African Games in Accra, where he won gold in the men’s 200m final becoming the first Ghanaian to achieve that feat since 1973.

His status was further recognised when he was named Ghana’s flagbearer for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Joseph Paul Amoah will also be leading Ghana's delegation at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championship.
