Parliament confirms arrest of MP Ohene Frimpong in the Netherlands

The Parliament of Ghana has confirmed the arrest of Ohene Kwame Frimpong, the Member of Parliament for the Asante Akyem North Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

A statement issued by the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, which was shared on the official social media handles of the House, indicated that the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has been informed of the matter.

It indicated that the leadership of the House is working with Ghana’s Mission in the Netherlands on the matter.

“It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, in the Netherlands.

“The Rt Hon Speaker and the leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana's Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter. The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” the statement read.

GhanaWeb earlier reported that our sources within Ghana's law enforcement agencies had confirmed the reported arrest of Ohene Kwame Frimpong by authorities in the Netherlands in connection with an investigation linked to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

According to sources familiar with the matter, the MP is being investigated for alleged financial crimes, including money laundering and suspected “romance scams” involving an estimated US$32 million.

A source also told GhanaWeb that the investigation into the allegations has spanned more than a year.

The Asante Akim North legislator was reportedly arrested over the weekend.

Details surrounding the circumstances of the arrest remain limited, and authorities have not officially confirmed the charges or the full scope of the allegations.

It is further reported that the case forms part of a wider international investigation being coordinated by law enforcement agencies across multiple jurisdictions.

At the time of filing this report, there had been no official statement from the MP or his representatives, while Ghanaian authorities were yet to publicly comment on the matter.
