MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong was reportedly arrested on May 10, 2026
Emotions are running high in Asante Akim North as residents rally behind their Member of Parliament, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, calling for his release following his detention in the Netherlands.
The MP was reportedly detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on Sunday, May 10, 2026, in connection with an FBI-linked investigation involving alleged financial crimes, including romance scams and money laundering totalling about $32 million.
Parliament on May 12, 2026, confirmed the detention through a release on its social media platform.
Many residents, in an interview with TV3, however, insist the allegations do not reflect the kind of leader they know.

They believe the MP is being targeted because of his impressive development efforts in the constituency.
“Because of the numerous things he’s doing in this constituency, people hate him a lot. But we all have to calm down because maybe the allegations are not true,” one resident said.
Another resident expressed shock and sadness at reports of how the MP was arrested.
“We heard that he was handcuffed immediately he got abroad. I was very shocked and sad at the same time because the same MP was here with us in Asante Akim North, sharing items. I am very pained, and I don’t even understand,” the resident said.
