Suspect in stepdaughter defilement case dies in police cell

A 38-year-old man arrested for allegedly defiling his 11-year-old stepdaughter has died in police custody at Agyeikrom Police Station in the Central Region.

Emmanuel Cudjoe was arrested in the early hours of May 10, 2026, on sexual abuse charges.

According to an adomonline.com report on May 13, 2026, officers received information at about 11:00 am the same day that Cudjoe had hanged himself in the cell using a strip torn from his blanket.

Personnel from the Elmina District Police Command and the Regional Crime Scene Management Team followed up on the case to inspect the scene.

"The suspect was found hanging against the cell wall with the fabric tied around his neck, and preliminary checks showed no visible marks of violence on the body," the police statement said.

The deceased, who was a carpenter, a native of Ayensudo near Elmina, was taken to Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, but was pronounced dead by a medical officer.

His body is currently being kept at the hospital morgue pending autopsy.

Police say they have informed relatives about the development and investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is ongoing.
