Traditionally, it is customary for families in Ghana to give their deceased relatives, who are believed to have lived exemplary lives, befitting funerals and burials with beautiful tombs. However, it appears that in Chiraa, a community in the Bono Region of Ghana, the reverence given to the dead is unmatched.

If not told, one might end up knocking on the doors of the tombs, thinking they are people’s homes, if the person accidentally finds himself or herself in the cemetery of the Chiraa community.

The cemetery looks like a well-planned estate in a city, with well-developed structures, including multi-storey buildings and self-contained units.

A video of the cemetery shared by Oheneba1TV showed tombs housed in properly built structures with modern building materials such as glass, ceilings, curtains and Italian doors, as well as gadgets such as air conditioners and lighting systems.

The narration in the video stated that he was shocked when he got to the place and could not believe that he was in a cemetery.

“As you can see, this is the most expensive, the most beautiful, the most extravagant in Ghana. There is no cemetery like this in Ghana except Chiraa,” he said.

One of the workers at the cemetery said that their job was to build homes for the dead.

He indicated that the tomb alone costs a minimum of about GH¢12,000. He added that the cost of the buildings in which the tombs are housed is similar to the cost of a regular building, with some costing as much as GH¢100,000.

He said most community members built the structures to honour their deceased relatives since they could not do so while they were alive.
