Man dies after swallowing ten tablets of tramadol in competition

Kukura, a young man in his mid-20s from Tugo in the Jirapa Municipality, has tragically lost his life after swallowing thirteen tramadol tablets in a reckless competition at Babile in the Lawra District of the Upper West Region, according to a 3news.com report.

According to the report, Kukura collapsed shortly after ingesting the tablets in an attempt to outdo his friend, who had previously taken five tablets at once.

He was rushed to the Babile Polyclinic and later transferred to the Upper West Regional Hospital in Wa, before being referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital. Despite efforts by medical personnel, he could not be saved.

The incident has sparked alarm among residents and stakeholders in Babile, who say tramadol abuse among the youth is rampant. One eyewitness noted that Kukura became weak almost immediately after the intake, underscoring the dangers of such practices.

Tramadol, an opioid prescribed for moderate to severe pain, can dangerously suppress the respiratory system and damage vital organs when abused. Yet, many young people in the region reportedly misuse the drug for excitement, physical endurance, or social prestige.

Authorities and community leaders in the Upper West Region have raised concerns over the growing abuse of tramadol, codeine-based syrups, marijuana, shisha, alcohol and other substances among the youth.
