Black Stars defender, Gideon Mensah has admitted he was not entirely certain of making Ghana’s latest squad despite enjoying a strong season at club level.

The left-back, who is preparing for what could become his second FIFA World Cup appearance, revealed that he had mixed feelings ahead of the squad announcement by new head coach Carlos Queiroz.

Speaking from Ghana’s training camp in Wales, Mensah explained that while he hoped his performances would earn him a place, he was also aware that a new coach often brings uncertainty.

“It was fifty-fifty. I was expecting it and I was a bit surprised because it’s a new coach,” he admitted.

The defender added that he focused entirely on his performances at club level rather than trying to predict selection decisions.

“I worked hard in my club and played every game, hoping that the call-up would come.”

“I won’t say I was expecting to be in the squad but at the same time I was also expecting that my work at club side would speak for me,” he added.

Mensah also reflected on his growing experience within the national team setup after spending nearly eight years with the Black Stars.

“Going to my second World Cup in my career and being with the national team for eight years, I feel so good,” he said.
