The Ghana Armed Forces have successfully cleared about 51 kilometres of the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway corridor as work steadily progresses on one of the country’s most ambitious road infrastructure projects.

In an update shared by Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, on X on May 28, 2026, he praised the military for what was described as “phenomenal work” being undertaken on President John Dramani Mahama’s transformational expressway initiative.

According to the update, compensation payments to citizens affected by the project are expected to commence in June after assessments by the relevant state agencies are completed.

“Steadily, deliberately, and with remarkable professionalism, the foundation is being laid for what will become one of Ghana’s most strategic and economically transformative corridors,” the statement noted, adding that the progress made so far has been impressive.

The latest development follows earlier reports on May 5, 2026, indicating that the Ghana Armed Forces had cleared 17.75 kilometres of thick vegetation only weeks after deployment to the site.

Four military work groups were seen operating from Asuboa near Akim Oda, working through difficult weather conditions to meet a 20-week deadline for the initial clearing phase.

The 198.7-kilometre six-lane expressway remains a major infrastructure priority under the Mahama administration and is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi from about six hours to approximately two hours when completed.

In November 2025, Dr Forson reiterated government’s commitment to completing the entire project within three years.
