Dr Kwame Asah-Asante is a political science lecturer
Political science lecturer Dr Kwame Asah-Asante has said Ghana’s flooding crisis continues because politicians are scared of losing votes.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show about the perennial flooding in Accra and the Weija Dam spillage, he accused leaders of refusing to enforce laws against illegal buildings near waterways and dams.
“The politicisation and the hypocrisy must stop if we want to fix this problem,” he said.
According to him, many structures should never have been allowed to exist in sensitive areas, but political interference has weakened enforcement.
“Politicians will come in and tell you that you cannot enforce the rules,” he stated.
Dr Asah-Asante said authorities know exactly what must be done, but fear of public backlash keeps governments from acting boldly.
“When are we going to put our foot down?” he questioned.
He warned that if leaders continue to avoid tough decisions, flooding and destruction will remain a yearly problem in Ghana.
“Every year, the rains will come and we will continue to lament,” he said.
The lecturer described the situation as an “annual ritual” that governments have failed to stop for years.
