Solomon Owusu is Communications Director of the United Party
United Party Communications Director Solomon Owusu says Ghanaians should stop allowing people to describe them as weak and overly peaceful while citizens are allegedly being attacked in South Africa.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Owusu reacted strongly to the recent xenophobic attacks that forced hundreds of Ghanaians to return home.
“Who told them Ghanaians are peaceful?” he questioned during the interview.
According to him, many citizens are angry over reports that Ghanaian-owned businesses were seized and people forced to flee despite having legal documents to stay in South Africa.
“This business of saying Ghanaians are peaceful, I keep hearing it. Who told you?” he said.
Owusu argued that Ghana’s history shows citizens can also fight back when pushed too far.
“If we were peaceful, would we have gained independence in 1957?” he asked.
The politician warned that young people in Ghana are becoming frustrated and may eventually demand stronger action against South African businesses operating in the country.
“The youth will rise up. It is not going to be business as usual,” he stated.
He added that many Ghanaians feel diplomacy alone is not enough after watching returnees arrive home crying over lost jobs, destroyed businesses and fear for their safety.
“You cannot sack Ghanaians from your country and expect everybody here to remain quiet,” Owusu said.
