Senior Ghanaian workers in the mining sector in South Africa have reportedly asked to be evacuated to Ghana.

According to a report by DW Africa, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, has said that the miners are afraid for their lives due to the ongoing xenophobic attacks.

The High Commissioner reportedly said that the miners reached out to him and have asked to be included in the ongoing repatriation exercise by the Government of Ghana.

“Senior Ghanaian workers in South Africa’s mining sector have asked to be included in Ghana’s evacuation exercise amid rising fears of xenophobic attacks.

“Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, said the workers reached out through their leaders, saying they feel unsafe ahead of a planned demonstration on June 30,” part of a post shared by DW Africa on Facebook reads.

Benjamin Quashie also refuted the claim by South African officials that only 10 out of the 300 Ghanaians repatriated to Ghana had the legal documentation required to be in South Africa.

He said that about 80 of the evacuees were lawful migrants.

Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana is screening the next batch of 600 Ghanaians to be evacuated from South Africa.
