Government praised for rapid evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa

The Chairman of Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee and Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, has commended the government of Ghana for what he described as a prompt and proactive response in evacuating Ghanaian citizens from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks against foreign African nationals.

In a statement issued on May 29, 2026, Vanderpuije expressed deep concern over reports of violence, intimidation and harassment directed at African migrants in parts of South Africa, noting that many Ghanaians had been affected by the unfortunate development.

The lawmaker singled out the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, for praise, citing what he described as decisive leadership and compassion in coordinating the evacuation exercise.

He also acknowledged the role played by Ghana's Ambassador to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, and officials of the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria in facilitating the operation.

"I am encouraged by the strong assurance given by Government that no Ghanaian citizen would be abandoned in moments of distress, regardless of where they may find themselves across the globe. This assurance reflects the true spirit of responsible governance and national solidarity," Mr Vanderpuije stated.

According to him, the Government's intervention demonstrates Ghana's commitment to protecting its citizens wherever they may be.

He further praised the authorities for providing emergency travel documentation, consular assistance and reintegration support for affected citizens returning home.

"These interventions demonstrate Ghana's unwavering commitment to the protection, dignity and welfare of its people," he emphasised.

The Chairman assured the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the support of Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee in efforts to protect Ghanaians abroad and strengthen the country's diplomatic engagements.

He said Parliament stood in solidarity with all victims of the xenophobic attacks and extended sympathy to families affected by the violence.

Vanderpuije also called on African leaders, the African Union and relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts aimed at promoting tolerance, peaceful coexistence and the protection of human rights across the continent.

"Africa's strength lies in unity, brotherhood and mutual respect. There is therefore no place for xenophobia, intolerance and violence against fellow Africans anywhere on the continent," he emphasised.

The Ablekuma South MP further urged Ghanaians living in South Africa to remain law-abiding, maintain contact with Ghana's diplomatic mission and comply with safety directives issued by the authorities.

The evacuation exercise comes amid renewed concerns about xenophobic attacks in South Africa, where foreign nationals have periodically faced hostility and violence from groups accusing migrants of taking jobs and economic opportunities from local citizens.
