Ahiagbah accuses NDC of betrayal over amendment of Anti-LGBTQ+ bill

National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deception regarding the recently passed Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.

He argued that the party has failed to honour promises made ahead of the 2024 general election.

In a post shared on X on June 1, 2026, Ahiagbah claimed that religious leaders, traditional authorities, and citizens who supported the controversial bill had been ‘scammed’ by the NDC after trusting the party with their votes during the December 7, 2024 elections.

“Pastors, chiefs, imams, and every Ghanaian who prayed, marched, and raised their voice for the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, you were scammed by the NDC, the people you trusted with your votes on December 7, 2024,” he said.

According to Ahiagbah, the NDC publicly endorsed the bill between 2021 and 2024, engaging churches, mosques and traditional leaders while presenting the legislation as a matter of Ghanaian values and identity.

He noted that all NDC Members of Parliament voted unanimously in support of the bill in February 2024 and had pushed for former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to assent to it.

Ahiagbah, however, alleged that the government led by President John Dramani Mahama had since introduced a revised version of the legislation with significant amendments that weakened key provisions.

“But instead of honouring their word, President Mahama and his NDC government have passed a revised version of the original Bill, quietly gutted by more than 30 amendments. The tough penalties? Gone. The strong protections? Weakened,” he indicated.

Describing the development as ‘painful’ and ‘deceitful,’ the NPP spokesperson argued that the NDC could not simultaneously describe the original bill as sacred while later revising it in government.

He further called on Ghanaians not to “settle for the diminution of the promise to protect and defend our values,” while urging support for the NPP and its 2024 presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia.

Ahiagbah questioned the credibility of the NDC, asking, “If the NDC could not keep their word on something this sacred, what exactly will they keep their word on?”
