The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, has highlighted the success of the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Publican Artificial Intelligence (AI) system following its reported contribution of an additional GH¢1 billion in customs revenue in April 2026.

According to him, the AI-powered customs compliance system has significantly strengthened revenue mobilisation through improved import assessments, reduced human discretion, and enhanced detection of irregularities that previously contributed to substantial revenue leakages.

Sarpong noted that the additional GH¢1 billion generated within a single month demonstrates the effectiveness of technology-driven reforms in strengthening public institutions and improving revenue collection.

He stated that the performance of the system provides clear evidence of how digital solutions can enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability within Ghana’s customs administration.

While acknowledging concerns raised by some stakeholders regarding the implementation of the system, he explained that challenges are a normal part of introducing any new technology.

According to him, every new system comes with operational limitations and initial difficulties, but the benefits being recorded far outweigh the challenges.

He stressed the need for continuous improvement of the platform through technical refinements and stakeholder engagement to maximise its effectiveness and long-term impact.

Sarpong further observed that stronger domestic revenue mobilisation is essential for financing key sectors of the economy, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, energy, and employment creation.

He added that the AI system promotes fairness and compliance by helping to ensure that importers accurately meet their customs obligations and by creating a more transparent customs environment.

He therefore encouraged stakeholders to support the continued development and enhancement of Publican AI, describing the additional GH¢1 billion revenue gain as a strong indication of the system’s potential to strengthen Ghana’s fiscal sustainability, improve public revenue management, and support long-term economic growth.
