Samuel Nartey George is the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has assured Ghanaians that the much-anticipated nationwide SIM re-registration exercise is on course and will commence before the end of 2026.
The exercise forms part of the government’s broader agenda to clean up the telecommunications space, strengthen digital identity systems, and deal decisively with fraud and other criminal activities associated with unregistered and improperly registered SIM cards.
Sam George details plans for new national SIM registration drive
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, June 6, 2026, the Minister disclosed that significant preparatory work has already been done.
“Just yesterday [Friday, June 5], we received clearance from the PPA to start the procurement process, and we are also at the Attorney General’s office so we can have a proper legal regime to do the registration and so the LI is currently with the AG’s department,” he said.
Sam George expressed optimism that all processes will be completed in time for the rollout.
“We are hopeful that by the time we will be done with the procurement processes for the platform, we will have finished with the AG, laid the LI in Parliament and have it mature, and I am hopeful that by the end of the year, we will be in a position to go,” he added.
Many Ghanaians have long complained about the ease with which fraudsters use unregistered SIM cards for scams, armed robbery coordination, and other illicit activities. The upcoming re-registration is therefore expected to bring much-needed order and security to mobile phone usage across the country.
The Minister’s update comes as citizens continue to push for stronger measures to protect them from the growing wave of telecom-related crimes.
