The Minority Caucus in Parliament has appealed to doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to resume work while efforts are made to resolve the impasse surrounding the suspension of the hospital's Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo.

In a statement issued on June 7, 2026, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, said it respects the position taken by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association but is concerned about the impact the strike could have on patients who depend on the hospital for critical healthcare services.

KATH doctors declare indefinite strike over CEO's suspension

The caucus noted that a prolonged withdrawal of services could endanger lives and worsen the challenges already facing the health sector.

"While we fully appreciate and respect the position taken by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association in defence of due process, institutional fairness, and professional integrity, we are equally concerned about the potential impact of a prolonged withdrawal of services on patients who depend on KATH for life-saving care," the caucus said.

The Minority therefore called on all parties involved to prioritise dialogue and engagement instead of industrial action.

"We therefore call on all parties to prioritise dialogue and constructive engagement over industrial action," the statement continued.

The caucus also urged the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to immediately engage the GMA, the KATH Doctors Association, and other stakeholders to find a solution to the crisis and restore normal services at the hospital.

"We urge the Minister for Health to immediately initiate discussions with the GMA, KATH Doctors Association, and other key stakeholders with the objective of securing the withdrawal of the suspension, restoring normal services, and preventing further deterioration of an already difficult situation," the caucus urged.

Reverse KATH CEO's suspension now – Minority to government

The appeal comes after doctors at KATH declared an indefinite withdrawal of services following the two-week suspension of the hospital's CEO by the Minister of Health over the temporary suspension of emergency admissions.

The doctors have maintained that the suspension should be reversed and have linked their return to work to measures aimed at addressing the challenges facing emergency healthcare delivery in the Ashanti Region.
