One confirmed dead after building collapses at North Industrial Area

One person has been confirmed dead following the collapse of a building in the North Industrial Area in Accra.

The collapse occurred at about 4:25 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2026, drawing a massive emergency response as rescuers raced against time to save lives.

According to a report by adomonline.com, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces were deployed to the scene, where rescue teams worked through piles of broken concrete and twisted metal in search of survivors.

Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who visited the scene, confirmed that one person had died in the incident, while efforts were still ongoing to rescue others feared trapped under the debris.

Earlier, one survivor was successfully pulled from the rubble and rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses described terrifying moments shortly before dawn when a loud crashing sound shook the area, forcing residents and nearby workers to rush out of their homes and towards the scene.

Some residents joined rescue teams in the initial efforts before emergency personnel fully took over the operation.

Firefighters from the Circle Fire Station and the GNFS Headquarters have been leading the rescue mission with specialised equipment, while heavy-duty machines continue clearing debris to create access routes for trapped victims.

Authorities have since cordoned off the area over fears that parts of the remaining structure could collapse, endangering rescue workers and nearby residents.

Sunday’s tragedy comes only days after another fatal building collapse at Adenta, raising fresh concerns about structural safety, enforcement of building regulations, and compliance within the capital.

The exact cause of the latest collapse remains unknown, though investigations are expected to begin after rescue operations conclude.
