The Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi-Bonte II, one of the most revered kings of the Ga State, was reported dead on Monday, June 8, 2026.
Multiple reports have confirmed that the paramount chief, who was well known in Ghanaian football circles for his association with Accra Hearts of Oak, where he served as an executive, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2026.
Reports now indicate that the Gbese Mantse died after a short illness, just two days after participating in traditional activities marking the lifting of the ban on drumming and noise-making ahead of the Homowo Festival.
A video from the event showed Nii Ayi-Bonte II being mobbed by attendees.
The paramount chief, who was beaming with smiles, could be seen being carried through the crowd at the event.
He could also be seen waving to the crowd as he danced to the beating drums.
Nii Ayi-Bonte II was unveiled as the first paramount chief of Gbese, the biggest division of the Ga State, in April 2023.
